THAT STORE is Chainstitching Sydney...

THAT STORE believes when it comes to denim jeans, everyone has a unique story to tell. We are constantly searching and finding avenues that will offer our customers diverse levels of individual service and care. For now, the denim heads and denim purists of Sydney will be grateful to know that we offer a chain stitch hemming service through the use of a Union Special 56400.

It’s been a long time coming and as far as we know, we are the only place in Sydney to offer this service. The time when one would get a mouthful from an alteration company about the inconvenience a chain stitch service would be to provide is now a thing of the past for us Sydney-siders.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of a chain stitch hem, it can be described as a detail similar to what selvage is to jeans. The details are minute; they pay homage to vintage jeans, craftsmanship and quality, but also represent the extra length designers and companies are willing to go in order to provide their customers with an array of artisanal elements.

One of the main reasons a chain stitched hem is still highly sought after is the ‘rope like fade’ it creates on the hem caused by the directional pull from the machine on the fabric when sewing. Once a chain stitched pair of jeans have been worn and washed over a period of time, a roped fade will appear due to the shrinking of the fabric and the slight directional tug from the chain stitch. Not only does it present itself as a more aesthetically pleasing cuff when rolled up, it also provides more strength and flexibility to a hem in comparison to a lockstitch.

This is an example of one of our alterations on a Nudie Slim Jim that has had the chain stitch run off and a bar-tack; just like the original. The thread was kindly provided by Nudie.

This is another example on a 13.7oz Japanese denim from FULLCOUNT; the 1246 Bush.

  1. Hey guys, can I send jeans from Melbourne to be hemmed by you?

I wanted some Edwin Sen Selvage Skinny jeans shortened and the leg further tapered on the selvage side so the selvage is ultra wide when worn cuffed.
